Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB)

The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, ICTA, and the Chemical Engineering Department (ChEngD), with Sostenipra (2009 SGR 1505) and GICOM (2009 SGR 95) research groups,  is part of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), one of the leader Spanish universities, which is geographically located in one of Catalonia’s most important focal points of technological development. Its own resources devoted to research, its collaboration with leading companies in the field of technology, public and private institutions, and its relations with research centers and applied technology institutes has made the UAB a pioneering and innovative research institution and awarded with the Campus of International Excellence by the Spanish Ministry for Education.

ICTA aims to promote interdisciplinary research and training in the area of environmental sciences and technology. ICTA has a strong expertise in multidisciplinary research between the natural and the social sciences as well as technological and collaborative work. At present, it has a team of 200 specialists.

ICTA’s mission is to promote and carry out research, and to train researchers who can contribute to our understanding of the environment and meet the challenges posed by the interaction between society and the environment.

The objectives of the research group Sostenipra  are to develop and apply tools for the sustainability and environmental protection. These tools within the Industrial Ecology framework are Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), ecodesign, ecoefficiency, material and energy flow analysis applied to different scales such as a process or a product, regional, national or global. These tools are applied to prioritized sectors, such as services, biomass and agriculture, the chemical industry, waste management, urban systems, forest and natural landscape.

Sostenipra is madLogo Sostenipra research groupe up of researchers and professors from (ICTA) Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals the department of Chemical Engineering of the UAB, IRTA Cabrils (Institut de Recerca en Tecnologia Agroalimentària) , and the spin-off company Inedit Innovació The group also teaches in the masters program of Environmental Studies of the UAB , and the JEMES and the JEMES program, supervising both masters and doctoral thesis.

Coordinator: Dr. Xavier Gabarrell.
Dr. Xavier Gabarrell, former director of the ICTA (2003-2006) teaches and researches at the Chemical Engineering Department at the UAB as well as ICTA. It has been the UAB coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Joint European Master programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES)(2007-2010). Expert in LCA, MFA, industrial ecology , and waste management. With almost 20 years of research and teaching experience, he has much experience in coordinating research teams. He’s involved in International and National Research Projects frequently with the role of coordinator.
